About The Position

The New York City (NYC) Bureau of Tuberculosis Control (BTBC) is committed to preventing the spread of tuberculosis (TB) and eliminating it as a public health problem in NYC. The core goals of the bureau are to identify all individuals with suspected or confirmed TB disease and ensure their appropriate treatment, ideally on directly observed therapy (DOT), and to ensure that individuals at high risk for progression from latent TB infection to TB disease complete treatment and do not develop disease. To fulfill its mission and goals, BTBC performs a number of integrated activities and provides patient-centered services in collaboration with local health care providers, laboratories, community partners and others. With a focus on public health and the needs of individuals with TB and their families, these activities support effective TB prevention and control. The Office of Surveillance is seeking a Surveillance Analyst. This person will conduct activities related to TB reporting including but not limited to monitoring and triaging incoming reports, following up with providers to ensure timely and correct reporting, and surveillance data QA and management within Maven. This individual will help to ensure that all persons with confirmed or suspected TB are reported and assigned for case management.

Requirements

  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health
  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to the above requirements

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing and managing incoming TB reports submitted by NYC providers electronically or by fax for accuracy and completeness; following-up with providers as necessary
  • Educating healthcare providers and infection control staff on TB reporting guidelines and procedures
  • Entering and updating surveillance data into the bureau's electronic surveillance and case management system (Maven) and ensuring appropriate assignment of TB cases and suspects
  • Collaborating with other units/offices in the bureau
  • Conducting analysis and review of surveillance data to improve and ensure data quality
  • Process and assign requests for hospital discharge of infectious TB patients
  • Handling and triaging calls coming from the TB Hotline
  • Other duties as required
