About The Position

The Surgical Technology Lab Assistant I provides support to surgical technology instructors. This position is an on-campus, part-time appointment, with a maximum of 19 hours per week, based in Champaign, Illinois. Responsibilities include preparing demonstrations, organizing supplies and equipment, and observing and assisting students with lab practice. The Lab Assistant will operate on a schedule established by the Surgical Technology (SUR) Program Director and is expected to handle confidential information and records, work independently, and effectively prioritize tasks.

Requirements

  • Must be credentialed to satisfy all appropriate accrediting bodies and the college.
  • Must hold a current Certified Surgical Technologist credential through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
  • Associate Degree or diploma from an accredited surgical technology program.
  • Two (2) years’ full time work experience as a surgical technologist in the scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both within the past five years
  • Verbal and mathematical abilities sufficient to organize the efficient use of the laboratory, operation of computers and software, and effective communication.
  • Ability to learn the computer laboratory resources, and new programs and equipment as technology changes.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office products.
  • Successfully complete a post offer, pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Meet all clinical requirements including successfully completing a post offer, pre-employment clinical drug test.
  • Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare laboratory environments for instruction by assembling necessary resources.
  • Answer student questions.
  • Monitor student practice times to maximize the number of students served.
  • Disassemble and store equipment.
  • Operate audio-visual equipment.
  • Notify the Surgical Technology Program Director of equipment repair, maintenance, and replacement needs.
  • Coordinate with other campus departments to troubleshoot problems.
  • Manage the surgical technology lab in compliance with college safety policies.
  • Gives verbal and written feedback in an objective fashion.
  • Ability to give the student measurable actions to improve skills.
  • Understands FERPA and confidentiality regarding student progress and information
  • Ability to present skills and methods in a consistent manner based on standardized skill sets and not personal preferences.
  • Follows and enforces program and college policies and procedures.
  • Maintain computer skills
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
