About The Position

Under the direction of the Unit Manager, RN Clinical Operations Coordinator, and/or RN Service Leads, the Surgical Technologist works directly under surgeon and physician guidance to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist must possess expertise in the theory and application of aseptic technique and demonstrate the ability to integrate knowledge of human anatomy, the surgical process, and procedural instrumentation, including advancing technologies. The technologist anticipates the needs of surgeons and physicians through continuous attention to the surgical process and patient condition to promote a safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical outcome. These skills support the performance of minimally invasive, invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic surgical procedures across a variety of surgical specialties. The Surgical Technologist provides patient care primarily through service to the surgeon or physician. They are expected to understand the procedure being performed, anticipate team needs, and maintain the sterile field to ensure quality patient care. The Surgical Technologist is accountable for maintaining current skills and knowledge consistent with their assignments and in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program (accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education Association) or completion of a structured training program with an equivalent professional credential.
  • New hires must obtain certification if they had no prior experience in a surgical facility before July 1, 2013.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains safety in the operation, management, and inspection of designated equipment and instruments in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and established policies and procedures.
  • Participates as part of the operating room team, demonstrating knowledge of the patient's history, allergies, and intraoperative care plan.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in the use of pharmacological agents dispensed to the sterile field, including recognition of mixtures, doses, and labeling per policies and procedures.
  • Maintains an environment that promotes patient safety and upholds aseptic technique during all aspects of surgical care.
  • Accurately completes documentation related to tasks within the surgical technologist's scope of practice.
  • Meets the requirements of the designated clinical recognition ladder for a Surgical Technologist.
  • Demonstrates proficiency and knowledge in sharps safety practices.
  • Demonstrates skill and understanding in intraoperative temperature regulation measures.
  • Demonstrates proper specimen handling and labeling techniques.
  • Exhibits strong knowledge and communication of medical terminology.
