About The Position

Assists in providing competent surgical care to patients and families whose healthcare needs range from uncomplicated to highly complex and rapidly changing. Demonstrates technical, organizational, and team skills, acts as clinical resource, and provides staff education. Proactively supports efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promote a safe environment at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience as a surgical technician in a pediatric OR setting.
  • High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from recognized surgical technologist program.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST); if ineligible to sit for exam, may waive requirement with 10 years ST experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of employment.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in ongoing process of healthcare delivery to patients and parents, incorporating age-related and developmental-specific requirements.
  • Provides technical skills assisting surgeon or staff and operating surgical equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Utilizes effective communication skills in providing care to patients and families.
  • Assists in collaborative practice with healthcare team.
  • Demonstrates cost effectiveness and efficiency with regard to time management and supply use.
  • Assists Assistant Nurse Manager with trays/instrumentation quality and other tasks as needed.
  • Serves as role model to staff by maintaining professional conduct, mentoring staff, and seeking learning opportunities.
  • Demonstrates professionalism in role by checking supplies and preparing for cases timely.
  • Participates in orientation of students, staff members, and other health professionals.
  • May participate in screening and interviewing process of Surgical Technologist applicants as needed.
  • Performs ongoing department-specific tasks as assigned.
  • Functions independently in all services; serves as strong resource in a minimum of one service.
  • Manages own professional development by rotating through other specialties to maintain competence if performing on designated surgical specialty team.
  • Seeks and provides feedback for improved clinical practice.
  • Identifies unit and/or service process issues and problem-solves with Assistant Nurse Manager for resolution.
  • Provides minimum of four in-services per year in area of specialty including OR huddle, SPD, or other areas as requested.
  • Serves as active member of unit council or journal club with greater than 75% annual attendance.
  • Achieves 75% attendance at staff meetings.
  • Promotes department Joint Commission readiness.
  • Assists SPD with tray assembly or other tasks during down time.
