About The Position

The Surgical Technologist at UVA Medical Center is responsible for gathering needed supplies and instrumentation for surgical procedures according to the surgeon preference card. The role involves maintaining the sterile field and anticipating the needs of the surgical team while being vigilant about the adherence to aseptic technique by all team members. The technologist differentiates between sterile and unsterile items processed by various sterilization methods and demonstrates a basic level of surgical case preparation by reviewing the surgeon preference card and case cart, gathering surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for general surgical procedures. The position also requires providing safe patient care at a basic level, demonstrating principles of aseptic technique and sterile conscience, and having a basic knowledge of surgical procedures and patient anatomy. Additionally, the technologist must demonstrate awareness of environmental safety practices for the patient, self, and team at all times. The role allows for taking a specialty certification exam upon completion of an accredited surgical technology program.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently enrolled or graduated from a surgical technologist training program accredited by CAHEEP/ABHES OR NCCT Approved program.
  • BLS required.
  • Certified to practice as a Surgical Technologist by NBSTSA or NCCT required at time of start date.
  • Current Registration with Virginia Board of Medicine required at the time of hire.
