Surgical Technologists perform various duties as a member of the surgical team to ensure a safe and successful operative procedure. This position functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and directly reports to Surgical Services management. It is expected that the Surgical Technologist will support system wide and surgical operations initiatives and practices. In addition, this person will actively participate in the surgical operations safety plan as outlined. Shifts and Scheduling Full-time, 40 hours/week. Monday - Friday, 10 hour day shift. Call includes weekends and holidays The Surgical Technologist role has a pathway opportunity identified for advancement to Surgical Technologist levels II or III. Essential Functions Surgical Technologists have accountability for ensuring the operating room and all surgical items meet sterilization criteria. Maintains the sterile field and a safe environment. The tech recognizes and addresses sharps and fire safety processes. Surgical Technologists prepare the operating room and instruments for the surgical procedure. Surgical Technologists may assist with sterile processing. This tech will assist the surgeon(s) during the procedure but stays within the ORT scope of practice. Surgical Technologists can identify emergency situations and exercise judgement when implementing procedures to respond to emergencies. On completion of the procedure, the tech will assist with room turnover, cleaning, and prepare for the next procedure. Surgical Technologists have a pathway opportunity identified for advancement to ORT II, III and IV.   • Ensuring the operating room and all surgical items meet sterilization criteria.
  • Maintaining the sterile field and a safe environment.
  • Recognizing and addressing sharps and fire safety processes.
  • Preparing the operating room and instruments for the surgical procedure.
  • Assisting with sterile processing.
  • Assisting the surgeon(s) during the procedure but stays within the ORT scope of practice.
  • Identifying emergency situations and exercise judgement when implementing procedures to respond to emergencies.
  • Assisting with room turnover, cleaning, and prepare for the next procedure.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.
  • Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technician (ORT) program, or: Graduated from a non-accredited surgical tech program within the past six months (not eligible for Tech in Surgery exam), or Two years of scrub tech experience in hospital/military surgical services within the last three years, or Hired for on-the-job training in a rural hospital, or International training equivalent and legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Competent in basic procedures or one or more specialty areas/facility case mix.
  • Able to take assigned call.
  • Colorado Surgical Technologists must be registered to practice as a Surgical Technologists with the State of Colorado.
  • Active National Certification as an ORT in Surgery or Certified Surgical Technologist.
  • Certification is expected within the timeframe outlined below.
  • Certification is expected after hire as follows: Surgical Technologists who graduated from an accredited program must certify within one year of hire (may use either NBSTSA or NCCT certification).
  • Surgical Technologists who have graduated from non-accredited programs or completed on-the-job or military training, need to certify as soon as possible. This can be done upon graduation or, according to the NCCT requirements, take beyond one year in order to meet worked hours (>6000) and case tracking requirements.
