About The Position

The Surgical Technologist works under the direction of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This role ensures that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The Surgical Technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The position may include day, evening, night, weekend, holiday, and on-call hours, with report-back time for on-call per department guidelines. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program required or program currently participating in accreditation process.
  • Less than 1 year experience as a Surgical Scrub technologist.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA preferred.
  • Approved CPR or BLS certification required within 90 days.
  • Other certifications per unit requirements (ACLS, PALS, PEARS, NRP).

Responsibilities

  • Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
  • Understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
  • Ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintains the sterile field.
  • Checks instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
  • Scrubs, gowns, gloves, and sets up sterile table with instruments and supplies, equipment, and medication.
  • Assists with patient placement and positioning on the table.
  • Drapes sterile field according to procedure and physician preference.
  • Performs appropriate counts for sponges, needles, and instruments with circulator according to policy.
  • Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants, creating and maintaining sterile field.
  • Passes instruments to surgeon during procedure and may assist with sponge operative site, hold retractors, cut suture, and cauterize vessels as directed.
  • Prepares and applies sterile dressings as directed by the surgeon.
  • Assists in cleaning the operating room after each procedure and prepping for the next patient.
  • Participates in department performance improvement activities.
