About The Position

The Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in the operating room by assisting the surgical team during complex procedures across at least two surgical specialties. This position involves preparing the operating room, ensuring a sterile environment, and providing necessary instruments and supplies during surgeries. The role requires a high level of expertise and adherence to safety protocols, as well as the ability to collaborate with other healthcare professionals.

Requirements

  • 2 years of current surgical technician experience demonstrating advanced knowledge of at least 2 surgical specialties.
  • Completion of a program sponsored by a nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation and maintenance of certification, or completion of an appropriate military training program, or maintenance of certification from an accredited program, or employment as a surgical tech in a healthcare facility on or before 12/27/2020, or employment as a surgical tech at another healthcare facility two years before 12/27/2020.
  • Compliance with continuing education requirements specified by the credentialing organization for certification.

  • Experience in multiple surgical specialties such as general, orthopedic, vascular, plastic and reconstructive, obstetrics and gynecology, thoracic, ophthalmic, neurosurgery, organ procurement, and endoscopic surgical settings.

Responsibilities

  • Arrange sterile setup for surgical procedures.
  • Pass instruments, sponges, and sutures to surgeons and surgical assistants.
  • Prepare sterile supplies and assist in cleanup of the operating room.
  • Check placement and operation of equipment and restock the operating room.
  • Help transfer patients to the recovery room after surgery.
  • Serve as a resource to other staff members and precept students and new employees.
  • Assist in the preparation, care for, and disposal of specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Participate in committees and inter-disciplinary teams.
  • Assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
  • Prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions before an operation.
  • Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment and adjust/check equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Collaborate with clinicians to disseminate new knowledge.
  • Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to the surgeon according to established policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment through continued alertness to safety and aseptic technique.
  • Prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites.
  • Transport patients to the operating room and help position them on the operating table.
  • During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and assistants.
  • Hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, sponge or suction the operative site, and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
