Under supervision, the Surgical Technologist I assists in operations. This role may involve helping to set up the operating room, preparing and transporting patients for surgery, adjusting lights and equipment, passing instruments and other supplies to surgeons and surgeons' assistants, holding retractors, cutting sutures, and helping to count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments. This position requires patient care.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • Experience as a surgical technologist in an acute care setting 2-3 years required
  • Knowledge of SPD Sterile Room
  • Ability to multitask, can work in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Advanced knowledge of sterile processing procedures and policies
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and departmental supply items is required

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Surgical First Assistant [CSFA (NBSTSA)] - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred
  • Certified Surgical Technologist [CST] - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred
  • Four (4) years experience as a surgical technologist in an acute care setting; committee and leadership experience 3-5 years preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assists in operations

  • Holds retractors
  • Cuts sutures
  • Helps count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments
  • Participates in time-out procedures
  • Attains extra supplies and equipment as needed
  • Sets up equipment independently
  • Participates as an active member of the Patient Care Team
  • Monitors and continually assesses operating room conditions, including patient and surgical team needs
  • Prepares patients for surgery, including positioning patients on the operating table and covering them with sterile surgical drapes to prevent exposure
