About The Position

Posting Job Description GENERAL SUMMARY: Delivers intraoperative care to the surgical patient, primarily in the scrub role. Serves the patients from neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. Job duties may vary by shift or may be unit-specific as this position floats to cover all areas of Perioperative Services. The Surgical Technician First Assistant (STFA) carries out functions that will assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The STFA practices perioperative nursing and has acquired the knowledge, skills and judgment necessary to assist the surgeon through organized instruction and supervised practice. The STFA practices under the direct supervision of the surgeon/ Registered Nurse. The SRFA does not concurrently function in the scrub surgical technician role. Serves patients from neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of accredited Surgical Technology program.
  • Completion of a Surgical Technician First Assistant course at an institution approved by the Association of Higher Learning, in which the curriculum addressed all of the content areas of the Core Curriculum for the ST First Assistant and a degree or certificate, was awarded.
  • Current CSTFA (Certified Surgical Technician First Assistant) desired.
  • Basic Life Support certified within six (6) weeks of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
  • Basic EKG course encouraged.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English language.

  • Current CSTFA (Certified Surgical Technician First Assistant) desired.
  • Basic EKG course encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preoperative patient assessment and teaching.
  • Provides a safe environment for patient and staff by implementing standards of aseptic technique and by controlling the physical and psychological aspects of that environment.
  • Communicates effectively with the patient, staff, physicians, and families.
  • Prepares for surgical cases in an efficient manner, anticipating needs of patient and surgeon, and provides creative strategies in meeting those needs.
  • Applies knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative technique relative to operative procedures wherein the STFA assists.
  • Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, legating vessels and by other means as directed by the surgeon.
