The Certified Surgical Technologist (Advanced) participates in the delivery of individualized peri-operative nursing care under the supervision and guidance of a licensed physician or a registered professional nurse. Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to assure quality patient care. The Certified Surgical Technologist (Advanced) Participates in the nursing process for patients of all ages served. Contributes to Carilion Clinics performance improvement activities and supports service area/facility/organization initiatives. Participates in unit educational activities. Advocates for the patient, protector of patient's rights, and provider of psychological/social/cultural support. Works as a professional colleague with the physician to enhance the effectiveness of patient care. Assists the anesthesiologist when applicable. Establishes and maintains a sterile field and assures team maintains sterile environment. Correctly and safely passes instruments to clinician. Participants in surgical counts (sponge, needle and instruments), per policy Follows policies, procedures, all regulatory standards and patient safety goals.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Successfully completed an accredited surgical technologist training program and holds a current credential as a certified surgical technologist from the National Board of Surgical Technology
  • Experience gained through hands-on experience and are grandfathered in the State of Va
  • Candidate has successfully completed a training program for surgical technology during the person's service as a member of any branch of the armed forces of the United States
  • 5 years of experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist required.
  • Certified in Surgical Technology (CST) required.
  • Obtain and/or maintain licensure with the Va Department of Health Professions.
  • Knowledge of instrumentations.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development through the life span, interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age and specific needs, and provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
