About The Position

The Surgical Technologist 2 prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures. Follows hospital regulations and industry procedures to tend to patients during pre-operation procedures. Performs pre-operation preparations to the patient's skin, body, and medical equipment. May be required to transport patients to and from the operating room. Relies on education, some experience, and judgment to accomplish job. Works under general supervision. Creativity and some latitude is expected to complete responsibilities.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience as a Surgical Tech (preferably in heart or vascular surgery).
  • Graduate of Surgical Tech training program (1 year of experience will substitute for this requirement).
  • BLS Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain medical equipment for surgical procedures.
  • Follow hospital regulations and industry procedures during pre-operation procedures.
  • Perform pre-operation preparations to the patient's skin, body, and medical equipment.
  • Transport patients to and from the operating room as required.
  • Ensure proper equipment, instruments, and supplies are provided for procedures and specialty areas.
  • Maintain a well-organized sterile setup/field at all times to contribute to smooth operations.
  • Anticipate and respond timely with efficiency when performing assignments.
  • Follow proper sterile techniques and maintain a sterile field at all times.
  • Assist the circulating RN with procedure/patient preparation.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of autoclaves and follow proper sterilization methods for selected instruments.
  • Follow proper procedures for counting instruments, sponges, and sharps.
  • Check instrumentation for accuracy prior to procedures and maintain throughout procedures.
  • Provide appropriate procedure supplies and equipment for age-specific needs within specified guidelines.
  • Transport patients safely and timely and assist in positioning as needed.
  • Ensure recommended AORN guidelines are followed at all times.
  • Follow case progress to anticipate surgeons' needs.
  • Participate actively in departmental improvement activities and staff meetings.
  • Assist OR staff with room turnovers to help decrease turnover times.
  • Respond to overhead pages as soon as possible, ideally within three minutes.
  • Assist with clerical OR desk duties after hours by answering phones or taking messages.
  • Participate daily in scheduled procedures and demonstrate competency in multiple service specialties.
  • Respond actively to emergency situations and/or trauma procedures in the OR.
  • Volunteer to stay late and cover shifts when applicable.
  • Serve as a preceptor for new team members.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
