Surgical Technician Job Responsibilities: Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurance if necessary. Adapts procedures to meet individual needs for patients of all ages. Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each individual surgical procedure. Assists in positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for surgical procedures. Anticipates needs of surgeons during intraoperative phase; including but not limited to: preparing passing instruments and sutures to the surgeon, assisting with lenses and scopes, exposing operative sites using correct instrumentation and assisting with the application of postoperative wound dressings under the direction and supervision of the surgeon. Accurately completes operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles, etc.) and follows proper procedure in case of incorrect count, reports all discrepancies to circulating nurse and surgeon immediately. Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures. Checks all equipment/instruments needed prior to each procedure to ensure correct functioning. Follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures. Scrubs for all procedures performed in Surgical Services Department. Sets up, scrubs and prepares for procedures at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless otherwise directed by circulating nurse or Surgery department director. Maintains an orderly and sterile instrument table for the purpose of efficiency; follows department standard set-up. Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after last case, restocks supplies when necessary and organizes effectively for end-of-case cleanup. Responsible for the care of instruments, equipment during intra/postoperative phase, including cleaning and processing of instruments.

Requirements

  • Surgical Tech Certificate from an accredited college, technical school, or equivalent
  • Minimum 6 months training, experience, or combination of education and experience
  • Current Washington State Surgical Technologist Registration
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
