About The Position

The Health Technician-Surgical Tech Operating Room serves as a Surgical Technologist in Nursing, Perioperative at the Orlando VA Medical Center. The Surgical Technologist (ST) functions as a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. The Operating Room Surgical Technologist assist the surgeon in performing surgical procedures and manages/directs the sterile field during the procedure. The OR Surgical Technologist is responsible for all aspects of the technical preparation for the participation in surgical procedures. The individual displays a broad knowledge base. and proficiency related to all types of surgical procedures in 8 operative services, including ophthalmology, general, and plastics, GYN, Ortho, Podiatry, ENT and Urology. The individual evaluates and collects all need instrumentation, equipment, positioning devices, suture material, and special devices needed for any of the multitude of surgical procedures performed in this versatile, fast paced Ambulatory surgery suite. Duties include but are not limited to: Possess expertise in the application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, implementation tools and technology to facilitate a surgeon's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Function as a primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures including but not limited to: General, Ophthalmology, GYN. Plastic, Podiatry, Ortho and Urology. Select and prepare instruments, supplies and equipment, and assist operative team according to Operating Room procedures Adheres to principles of strict aseptic technique in preparing set-up for specific procedures. Prepare, organize, and maintain highly complex sterile surgical set-ups Assists with positioning patients for specific procedures. Report and document pertinent patient and/or supply/equipment information as it pertains to surgery. Is able to recognize potentially hazardous situations (frayed cords) and independently takes corrective action Observe and respond promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipate the needs of the surgeon; be knowledgeable of a wide variety of complex surgical procedures and possible complications. Proper handling of surgical specimens. Verify completeness of instruments/sponge/needle counts Identify unsafe or defective instruments/equipment and takes appropriate corrective actions. Assist in positioning, preparation, and draping procedures. Assist as needed with procedures performed in the Specialty Clinics. Maintain proficiency in scrubbing all operative procedures within the scope of the operating room. Transport patients, observing correct safety techniques. Ensure proper disposal of instruments, linen, trash, needleless, sponges, and all biomedical waste Participates in departmental process improvements Perform other related duties as assigned.
