Pay Information: Internal Hires: Pay rate will be determined based on applicable personnel rule or union contract terms. External Hires: Step placement and rate of pay will be determined based upon relevant experience. Surgical Tech I starts at $28.40 per hour. Surgical Tech II starts at $30.22 per hour. Please note: In lieu of fringe benefits, PRN employees receive an hourly differential in addition to their hourly rate between 10% and 25% depending on position level. Job Summary: Surgical Technician 1: Under general supervision, performs the full range of Surgical Technician functions and tasks with full proficiency (journey level). At this level, the incumbent has at least one year of Surgical Technician experience or has completed an accredited program. Incumbents also may be assigned to provide more surgical assistance to the team as directed by the Surgeon. Surgical Technician 2: Under general direction, positions serve as a knowledgeable resource for the lower levels, provide training and mentoring (preceptor), and are typically the subject matter expert for one or more service areas. At this level, incumbents: Serve as preceptor for area(s) the incumbent is a subject matter expert. Actively participate in decision making and education of staff concerning acquisition of new equipment and supplies. Develop and delivers a minimum of three educational topics per year to Operating Room staff. Incumbents may also be assigned process improvement assignments; assist with developing or revising policies and procedures; improving instructional materials, training program, and orientation; assist in acquiring new equipment and supplies; and developing and delivering educational topics for the Surgical Technicians and related medical staff.

Requirements

  • Surgical Technician 1: Education: High School Graduate or equivalent. Experience: One (1) year of surgical technician experience that included working in all service areas such as general surgery, gynecology, otolaryngology (ENT), urology, orthopedics. Certification(s): Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Surgical Technician 2: Education: High School Graduate or equivalent. Experience: Two (2) years of Surgical Technician experience that included assignment in three or more specialty areas such as, but not limited to: general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, endoscopy, otolaryngology (ENT), urology, orthopedics. Certification(s): Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • All new employees are required to produce a negative drug screen for all illegal substances in the State of Alaska prior to start of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Surgical Technician 1: Preferred Experience: Working in service areas such as obstetrics, endoscopy, and ophthalmology.
  • Surgical Technician 1: Substitution: Six (6) months experience as a Surgical Technician Trainee and completion of Bartlett's trainee program OR Completion of an accredited Surgical Technician or Surgical Technologist Program may substitute for the required experience.
  • Surgical Technician 2: Substitution: Completion of a certified Surgical Tech program AND has the NBSTSA or NASC certification
