ABOUT THIS JOB Location : Richmond, VA Department : Organ Recovery Schedule : Part-Time Variable (Six to Eight Shifts per month) Clinical Status : Clinical Plus HOW YOU’LL MAKE AN IMPACT As a Surgical Technician, you’ll play a vital role in advancing our mission. In this position, you’ll be responsible for handling the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. You’ll be responsible for thorough understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipating the needs of the surgeon. Knowledgeable and able to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and constantly vigilantly to maintain the sterile field. Your work will have purpose every single day, contributing directly to life-changing outcomes.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • TWO (2) years experience as a Scrub/Surgical Tech (including Tissue Processing, Tissue Recovery, Operating Room, or other Sterile Processing Experience), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or Paramedic experience
  • Valid State Drivers’s License
  • Attention to Detai l: Able to perform tasks thoroughly and with care; checks to ensure a high degree of quality/accuracy.
  • Communication : Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, building relationships with all professionals at different levels within and outside the organization
  • Computer : MS Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Psychological Skills : Able to perform routine tasks and work under stressful situations.
  • Time Management & Multitasking: Able to prioritize multiple, competing priorities and manage time/workload; demonstrated ability to multi-task and identify project interdependencies and potential risks/pitfalls.
  • Critical Thinking: Able to make decisions independently regarding logistical arrangements.
  • Logistical Analysis: Able to think through and solve problems step-by-step often looking beyond the obvious solution to a problem .
  • Teamwork : Able to be collaborative and work as part of a team to resolve issues, complete tasks, and meet business needs

Nice To Haves

  • Associate Degree
  • ONE (1) year related OPO work experience
  • Certified Scrub Tech (CST) or Certified Transplant Preservationist (CTP) certification

Responsibilities

  • Dons operating room (OR) attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Gathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.
  • Performs the surgical scrub, and donning gown and gloves.
  • Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.
  • Assists the team with gowning and gloving.
  • Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
  • Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure.
  • Secures tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.
  • Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure.
  • Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.
  • Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
  • Sponges or suctions the operative site.
  • Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.
  • Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
  • Prepares and passes off specimen (s) as appropriate.
  • Cleans and prepares all instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Assists other members of the team with cleaning of room.
  • Assists with postmortem care of the donor.
  • Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
  • Packages and labels kidneys for local transplant centers for organ recoveries as needed.
  • Maintains stocking and preparation of supplies necessary for organ recoveries .
