About The Position

A Surgical Technician (often called a scrub tech) works as a part of a surgical team in Operating Rooms as well as in the Labor and Delivery unit. Surgical Technologists provide crucial support to a surgeon such as preparing for surgery, passing instruments, providing needed supplies such as sponges, receiving and containing tissue, and much more. Surgical Technologists generally work in a hospital and/or outpatient clinic setting.

Requirements

  • High School education is required to obtain a job as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Optional certification to become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is available.
  • To become a CST, candidates must complete an exam through the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NBSTSA).

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for surgery by ensuring all necessary instruments and supplies are available.
  • Assist the surgeon during operations by passing instruments and providing support.
  • Maintain a sterile environment in the operating room.
  • Receive and contain tissue specimens for analysis.
  • Provide support in the Labor and Delivery unit as needed.
