Job Summary Under the supervision of the circulating RN, the Surgical Technologist prepares the OR, maintains aseptic technique, performs the first scrub role, anticipates the needs of the surgeon, and ensures accurate counts, specimen handling, and documentation. This role participates in call and supports case turnover, safety, and cost-effective care.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program; or LPN graduate with prior surgical technology experience.
  • BLS certification.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English; professional communication and teamwork.
  • Commitment to progress on the career ladder within an appropriate timeframe.

Nice To Haves

  • CST certification (Association of Surgical Technologists/NBSTSA) and maintenance of certification via CE or retesting.
  • 1+ year perioperative/OR experience; advanced knowledge in one or more surgical specialties; experience as a preceptor.
  • Familiarity with OR emergency management and circulating support tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and prepare the surgical suite, equipment, supplies, and instrumentation; complete required documentation (medications, specimens, sterilization).
  • Perform the first scrub role (gowning/gloving, back-table setup, maintaining sterile field, anticipating surgeon needs, applying sterile dressings, assisting with patient transfer).
  • Uphold strict aseptic technique and infection prevention practices; respond appropriately in OR emergencies.
  • Handle instruments, sponges, sutures, catheters, drains, and dressings safely; participate in cost containment and efficient turnover between cases.
  • Accurately label and manage specimens; support documentation and patient charging in the EHR.
  • Demonstrate service excellence, teamwork, and professional communication with surgeons, anesthesia, and perioperative staff.
  • Participate in call and respond within required timeframes; precept students and/or new hires as competency level increases.
  • Progress through the career ladder (Levels I–IV) by building specialty expertise, precepting, and contributing to policy, equipment trials, competencies, and quality initiatives.
