The Surgical Technologist works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This role ensures the operating room environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and procedures maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in sterile and aseptic technique, human anatomy, surgical procedures, and the implementation of tools and technologies to assist physicians in invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology program
  • Current Surgical Tech Certification required, or if employed prior to July 1, 2021, registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine required
  • Ability to create and maintain a sterile field
  • Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology

  • Previous Surgical Technologist experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures
  • Ensure that the operating room environment is safe
  • Ensure that equipment functions properly
  • Ensure that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety
  • Combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures
  • Collaborate with the leadership team and UCIC to identify and resolve unit issues
  • Keep co-workers and intra-op staff informed of any updates/issues
  • Follow written instructions as needed
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age of the patients served
  • Collect, organize, and enter information into the patient scheduling application
  • Assist with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist
  • Demonstrate knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique
  • May be asked to perform additional duties as assigned
