When functioning as a Tech First Assistant (Tech III), I demonstrated knowledge of surgical assisting and closure.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology program or military equivalent training in the Surgical Technologist role is required.
  • Certification in Surgical Technology or verifiable Surgical Tech experience prior to 9/1/2009 is required.
  • Current BCLS certification from the American Heart Association required.
  • 1 year of Surgical Technologist experience is preferred.
  • High School Graduate / GED

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of applying surgical gloves using aseptic technique and maintaining a sterile field.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of preparing for surgery by 'pulling' the appropriate supplies and instruments for the procedure.
  • Understands and recognizes the different surgical instruments and their applications.
  • Displays appropriate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology in order to prepare and assist in surgical procedures.
  • Maintains a safe sterile field by positioning sharps correctly, labeling all medications on sterile field, understanding of electrocautery and other devices that generate heat to prevent possible fires in the O.R., and participating in a 'timeout' with rest of the surgical team to maintain patient safety.
  • Demonstrates ability to appropriately set up for a surgical procedure and follow protocol in the counting of supplies/instruments to ensure no foreign object is left inside of the patient.
  • Understands the principles of and can competently assist a surgeon during a procedure and possesses adequate knowledge of the procedure itself.
  • Displays the ability to differentiate sutures and their applications.
  • Demonstrates the ability to close a surgical site (under physician supervision) with appropriate suture.
  • Demonstrates a teamwork approach in the care of a patient during the perioperative phase.
