About The Position

Assists the surgical team to provide patient care for assigned patients under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of physical and technical requirements of surgical intervention: highly complex surgical cases/specialty resources. Acts as a resource person regarding instrumentation requirements, availability, and set up. Able and willing to troubleshoot. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Ability to scrub more than three specialties proficiently. Willingness to assist circulator and takes initiative to ensure availability of necessary equipment. Expert in chosen specialty area; performs all specialty procedures independently, is identified as a resource person for more than 1 specialty. Acts as preceptor to actively train new staff and participate in the orientation process, offering performance feedback to management. Responsible for maintaining effective communication skills. Participates in monitoring and maintaining resources in specific department. Understands and contributes to the vision/mission and goals of the department.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (G.E.D.)
  • Current CPR (American Heart Association required)
  • Minimum of seven year's of experience
  • Must possess effective interpersonal skills, team building, problem solving, critical thinking, coaching and mentoring.
  • Principles of asepsis
  • Must be able to work variable shifts, holidays and/or weekends.
  • Must be able to take call rotation when required.
  • Must be able to perform all duties, including lifting and transferring, using proper body mechanics.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of Surgical Technologists course from an accredited facility.
  • Knowledge of hospital environment desired.
  • Previous hospital and/or health care related experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the surgical team to provide patient care for assigned patients under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse before, during, and after surgery.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of physical and technical requirements of surgical intervention.
  • Demonstrate preparedness for surgical procedures and anticipate supplies and equipment needed by utilizing surgeon's preference card.
  • Review operation of needed equipment for procedures.
  • Review anatomy and physiology involved.
  • Place equipment and supplies in the operating room and arrange instruments according to preference cards.
  • Use proper technique for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and draping.
  • Assist with proper positioning of patient.
  • Hand instruments and supplies to surgeon, hold retractors, cuts sutures, and perform other technical tasks as directed by surgeon during operation.
  • Avoid unnecessary conversation during procedure.
  • Demonstrate intra-operative knowledge and ability.
  • Keep accurate count of needles, sharps, and instruments according to policy.
  • Demonstrate understanding of principles of asepsis.
  • Use sterile technique when opening supplies and throughout procedure.
  • Organize in preparation for end-of-case and assist in clean up and turnover of rooms.
  • Dispose of all sharps and biohazardous waste items appropriately.
  • Handle specimens properly.
  • Review operation of equipment and supplies as personal needs dictate to remain current in ability to use and operate equipment and supplies.
  • Demonstrate ability to provide appropriate care to patients of all ages.
  • Participate in "time-out" and follow Universal Protocol Policy.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of principles and proper use of various sterilization types and document cycles appropriately.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to manager.
  • Use time management and flexibility in organizing and prioritizing workload to provide optimal service to the department and the network.
  • Identify problems/concerns on the nursing unit and assist in developing resolutions in a positive, constructive manner.
  • Independently complete work in accordance to specific environment standards and follow established policy and procedures.
  • Participate in performance improvement teams/activities and quality improvement measures within the department.
  • Give input to department Manager/Director in coordinating ongoing treatment plans and progress.
  • Monitor the efficiency of the unit's operations and recommend improvements.
  • Demonstrate complex multi-system assessment skills.
  • Advocate for patient by influencing and facilitating interactions to ensure quality care.
  • Support the Strategic Planning Process and provide information objectives.
