About The Position

The position involves assisting surgeons, anesthesia personnel, Registered Nurses, and other professionals in the operating room. The role includes performing surgical scrub duties, patient positioning, and ensuring a sterile environment. The individual will work closely with cardiovascular surgeons and must demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures, equipment, and patient care. Responsibilities also include maintaining equipment, ensuring safety protocols, and participating in training programs.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • American Heart Association BLS Card.
  • Certification from an approved Surgery Technician School.
  • Current Los Angeles County Fire Card (or must be obtained within 30 days of employment).
  • Assault Response Competency (ARC) required (within 30 days of hire).

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum one (1) year recent experience in an acute care setting preferred.
  • Minimum one (1) year recent experience in OR/OB preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs in-room surgical scrub duties; patient positioning and draping; sterile instrument and supplies set-up.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of care and handling specimens appropriately.
  • Assists in preparation of surgical procedures by anticipating needs of physician.
  • Safely operates all electrosurgical equipment, diagnostic equipment, microscope, laser equipment, video equipment, and disposable equipment.
  • Provides a safe, therapeutic environment for patients and families.
  • Works efficiently with physicians and RNs in various surgical procedures.
  • Maintains sterile technique and demonstrates knowledge of anatomy related to procedures.
  • Assembles and troubleshoots all equipment necessary for procedures.
  • Ensures all necessary equipment is in the room prior to the start of a case.
  • Answers telephone in a prompt and courteous manner.
  • Performs efficiently in crisis and emergency situations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific care and communicates effectively.
  • Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper function of CV equipment.
  • Attends hospital-sponsored training programs as required.
  • Maintains CPR certification and OR Technician certification.
  • Monitors for and calls attention to breaks in technique.
  • Conducts accurate sponge, needles, and instrument counts with RN.
  • Assists in the positioning of patients and maintains their safety.
  • Monitors skin integrity and communicates to circulating RN.
  • Accepts assignment as preceptor for new staff.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for cost containment and conservation of supplies.
  • Participates in staff meetings and in-services determined by the Director or nurse manager.
  • Participates in evaluation of new supplies, equipment, and/or instruments.
