About The Position

In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Surgical Tech Extern will gain hands-on work experience while finishing up their last half of their degree program and clinical rotation. The Surgical Tech Extern will assist Surgical department with carrying out patient care activities within the scope of training and experience. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times. Job Functions: Under the observation of the surgical tech, OR Nurse or Surgeon performs a variety of preparatory, scrubbing and related services necessary to provide patient service in the operating room and assists with surgical cases in all specialty areas. Provides a clean, safe, and efficient area conducive to optimal patient care. Utilizes aseptic surgical techniques in the preparation of materials, supplies and equipment for surgical procedures (this includes but not limited to assistance with gowning and gloving; preparation and draping of the surgical area; provision of a sterile field, instruments, suture and related materials; anticipation of the Surgeons' needs; passing of instruments and/or supplies; holding of retractors, observing and reporting possible breaks in aseptic technique; and assisting in maintaining a sterile, dry, unobstructed field). Acts as a scrub assistant for surgical procedures and maintains basic knowledge of a variety of procedures. Ensures the environmental disinfection, safety, and efficiency of the operating room. This includes but not limited to setting up the room for each case including moving equipment (i.e., tables, cameras, microscopes, fracture table, and instrument pans), operating the various types of equipment used during operating room procedures, and returning equipment post procedure. Notifies appropriate staff of equipment and supply problems. Transports patients and/or equipment and supplies. Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique. Maintains checking of the working condition of equipment, sterility, and sending damaged items out for repair. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary. 3 West Women & Newborn Additional Functions: Provides safe environment for obstetrical, newborn, and post-op patients including cleaning of LDRs and the OB OR and completion of check lists and restocking essential supplies. Maintains strict confidentiality at all times. Provides direct care to obstetric, newborn, and post-op patients as assigned by charge nurse or under the delegation of the registered nurse. Assists the HUC with clerical functions. Assists with teaching the patient/family/significant other. Consistently documents necessary information in the EMR. Assists in the maintenance of equipment. Assists with vaginal and cesarean deliveries under the direction of the registered nurse and provider within scope of practice. Functions as a scribe in OB emergencies. Performs bedside testing under the direction of the registered nurse.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Surgical Technology and must have completed the first half of the Surgical Technology program required.
  • BLS required upon hire – will obtain during orientation if needed
  • Knowledge of aseptic surgical techniques used in the preparation of materials, supplies, and equipment for various surgical procedures.
  • Knowledge of various types of equipment used in the operating room.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
