About The Position

The Surgical Technologist Team Lead, under the direction of the Nurse Manager, will lead and coordinate the activities of the surgical tech team, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and operational efficiency. This role requires strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to professional development. This role will also maintain surgical technician competencies and will be able to staff in when needed.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Certificate or Associate’s Surgical Tech degree OR 3 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist in lieu of the certificate or degree requirement.
  • Associates Degree in Surgical Technology or a related field required within 3 years of hire
  • 3 or more years of experience as a Surgical Technologist
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) (AST)
  • Respirator Fit Test - The University of Kansas Health System (TUKHS) upon Hire

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise the surgical tech team, ensuring effective teamwork and communication.
  • Coordinate staffing and scheduling to ensure adequate coverage for all surgical procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations and protocols.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and performance evaluations for surgical tech staff.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Assist in quality improvement initiatives and audits.
  • Handle administrative tasks such as inventory management and ordering supplies.
  • Takes responsibility for self and/or team accountabilities and instills sense of ownership in others to improve performance; looks for ways to improve individual and/or team performance.
  • Recognizes group dynamics and acts as a role model by guiding others/team to modify one's communication style to suit different situations and audiences.

  • Uses and demonstrates clinical expertise in the assessment of staff learning needs, capabilities, and readiness.
  • Maintains current knowledge of and ensures compliance with all regulatory and professional standards of care which includes JCAHO, CMS, IHI, CAP, etc, instructing staff and ensuring compliance with standards through daily on-going monitoring and performance management.
  • Creates and maintains a supportive work environment for the entire team.
  • Creates and maintains an atmosphere of respect and courtesy towards patients, staff and colleagues.
  • Analytical skills necessary to resolve complex problems, assist with the development of standards of care and procedure, and evaluate the quality of care.
  • Provides input into performance appraisals and other personnel transactions.
  • Collaborates with the Nurse Manager, Assistant Director, Director, and Physician leadership to establish patient care standards and evaluates staff compliance.
  • Serves as a mentor for excellence in clinical practice and patient and employee satisfaction
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
