About The Position

The South Operating Room (SOR) is a large 25-bed OR primarily focused on adult inpatient procedures, with a small volume of outpatient procedures. The surgical specialties include Cardiac/Thoracic, General Surgery/Minimally Invasive/Colorectal/Bariatric, Gynecology, Oral Maxillofacial, Neuro/neuro spine, Orthopedic/orthopedic spine, Otolaryngology, Plastics, Transplant, Urology, Vascular, Robotic (Urology/GYN/Oral), and Trauma. The Surgical Technician (ST) plays a crucial role in ensuring a safe OR environment, maintaining equipment, and facilitating surgical procedures with a focus on patient safety. The ST is expected to manage stressful situations effectively and embody the OHSU Core Competencies: Accountability, Collaboration, Communication, Diversity, Integrity, Respect, Service Orientation, and Teamwork.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification at time of hire.
  • Graduated from a Nationally-Accredited organization approved by the Oregon Health Authority.
  • Hold and maintain a national Surgical Technologist Certification by NBSTSA.
  • Completion of a surgical assistant or surgical technologist certification accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
  • Completed a Surgical Technologist training program in the military or Public Health Service, or provide documentation of practice as a Surgical Tech for at least two of the three years preceding January 1, 2017.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proficiency in clinical skills/knowledge specific to Perioperative Services.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of sterile technique.
  • Proficient in the scrub role in the surgical specialties.
  • Provide fundamental components of patient comfort, safety, privacy, and respect within the perioperative setting.
  • Identify and develop areas of expertise within the surgical specialties.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of equipment, instrumentation, and supplies.
  • Perform effectively in emergent situations.
  • Recognize and effectively respond as directed in emergency situations.
  • Manage time effectively and accomplish caseload assignments in a timely manner.
  • Complete turnover of the operating room between cases before or within established timelines.
  • Use unassigned time productively.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and collaborate with surgical team members.
  • Seek input and consultation, and report incidents and errors in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ensure confidentiality is maintained in all forms of communication.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in response to unexpected changes in workload and assignment.
  • Incorporate conflict management skills in the resolution of issues.
  • Participate in projects and committees as requested/assigned.
  • Convey a positive image of peers, colleagues, and OHSU to patients, families, the public, and other health care team members.
