About The Position

Responsibilities: The Surgical Services Educator requires knowledge of AORN standards and guidelines, performance standards by job classification, and knowledge of all skills for all job classifications in surgical services in the hospital. Creates, facilitates and/or coordinates all educational activities, including but not limited to self-study, classroom, outside seminars and in-services, in collaboration with department leadership. Oversees the entire orientation process to include the preparation of orientation schedules, materials, and selection/preparation of preceptors for new clinical staff. Assesses staff competency upon hire and individualizes orientation to department role in collaboration with the Director and Supervisors. Assesses, develops, plans, facilitates, mentors, provides one-on-one and group teaching of skills for all Surgical Services staff. Organizes, coordinates, and conducts the education and training for all Surgical Services employees to create a foundation for consistent standard of performance. Evaluates, modifies, implements, and facilitates educational content, training programs, in-servicing opportunities, and training methodologies based on identified needs, course objectives, and evidence-based practices. Through observation and past performance records, the educator will identify areas of concern and implement in-services, additional training, and create process improvements in conjunction with the Director and Supervisors of Surgical Services. Conducts and records safety orientation for new hires, annual compliance, and safety violations. Attends Safety Champion meetings. Ensures that all education records, attendance logs, in-service records, competency paperwork, and other educational documentation are accurate, completed in a timely manner, and filed for future reference and regulatory agencies. Determines measurable goals and objectives for educational programs and in-services. Provides clear direction and parameters in the process of planning educational activities to facilitate learner’s achievement of educational objectives. Develops and uses evaluation tools to measure effectiveness of training with Director and Supervisors. (Competency Forms & Checkoff Sheets). Conducts competency evaluations through skill demonstration and written assessments to determine competence and/or areas of performance improvement. (daVinci, Endoscopy, Surgical Services, etc). Engages in Quality and Process Improvement activities and initiatives. Participates in evidence-based research to identify strategies for improving professional development activities and nursing practice. Collaborates with Vendors to coordinate and promote educational events. Provides feedback to leadership regarding orientation, training, and educational process of staff members. Provides information to leadership on the implication of policies and procedures being formulated and recommends specific action. Collaborates with other members of Surgical Services to develop, write, evaluate, and maintain the departmental policies and procedures. Continuously researches and studies the professional fields in Surgical Services. Participates in continuing education programs to: improve course curriculum and content, update best practices, and maintains personal competence and skills needed to perform duties adequately. Acquires knowledge and skills appropriate to support roles in leadership, education, and customer service. Attends regional or national conferences related to improving professional development for self and staff. Compliant with all practice requirements established in the standards set by DNV, AORN, AAMI on all sterilizers, including biological, chemical, and mechanical monitoring. Facilitates the provision of periodic reports to appropriate hospital representative to document and evaluate progress toward attainment of organizational goals for RN specialty certification, ST certification, and completion of a CSFA program. Maintains a professional image and exhibits excellent customer relations to patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers in accordance with our Service Excellence Standards and Core Values. Contributes to an environment that is conducive to the education of students, peers, colleagues, and others. Serves as a positive role model, team player, supporter, collaborator, and steward for all staff. Actively participates in service excellence (patient experience), surgeon satisfaction, and staff engagement.

Requirements

  • Be able to pass the certification exam for CNOR designation.
  • Minimum of five year’s experience in Surgical Services.
  • Nursing License in good standing, required.
  • Certification must be maintained according to the certifying association’s requirements
  • Associates degree in nursing required.

Nice To Haves

  • Surgical Services Educator experience preferred.
  • BSN/MSN preferred.
