About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Staff Nurse, the Surgical Service Support Tech assists with the care of patients to maintain a safe, clean environment. This role is responsible for the cleaning of operative suites between cases and transporting patients from the Nursing Units to the OR / Endo Lab and from the PACU and Endo Lab to the Nursing Units. The tech must also be available to assist with positioning of patients, run errands to other hospital departments, and respond to other tasks as necessary. Requirements

  • GED Required or High School Equivalent Required or High School Graduate Required
  • Basic Life Support or BLS - Instructor (All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.)
  • Minimum 5 years of previous experience as an environmental service tech, OR Tech Required or OR Support, or patient care tech.
  • Good communication skills / good organizational skills.
  • Must be able to perform effectively in a stressful and fast paced work environment.
  • Must have the ability to prioritize appropriately.
  • Must be detail oriented and have the capacity to effectively multitask throughout the work shift.
  • Must have excellent communication skills and the capacity to interact professionally with a variety of customers, including but not limited to patients, families, co-workers, volunteers, and physicians throughout the work shift.
  • Must possess the ability to function independently, yet productively as a cooperative team member with various work teams associated with the position.
  • Must be compliant, with a willingness to follow all Hospital policies as well as the established practices, protocols and procedures of the position, department and applicable professional standards.

Responsibilities

  • Wipes with germicidal solution at end of day or as needed.
  • Performs routine cleaning of the OR.
  • Cleans OR rooms between all cases unless told otherwise.
  • Removes soiled linen and disposes of properly, replacing clean plastic bag between cases.
  • Places trash in appropriate containers following procedures and replaces plastic bag.
  • Following every case, mop head and water are changed, when using reusable mop heads.
  • Upon completion of each procedure, suction canisters and tubing are disposed of and/or Neptune suction is emptied and cleaned.
  • Adjusts proper amount of cleaning solution when changing water.
  • Cleans rooms at end of day.
  • Transports patients to the Operative Suite/ Pre-Operative Area.
  • Checks identification of patient in OR and on nursing unit when transporting patient.
  • Moves patient in a safe and timely manner.
  • Chart accompanies patient and is taken to front desk on arrival to OR or Pre-Op desk.
  • Changes linen between patients.
  • Assists in moving patients to and from OR table.
  • Provides roller moving equipment for moving patient at completion of procedure.
  • Exchanges OR transport stretcher for unit bed as requested.
  • Aids in moving patient upon request of nurse before or after procedure.
  • Uses safe technique anytime assisting with patient transfer.
  • Insures safety belts or side rails are used on every patient during transport.
  • Assist circulating Nurse with patient positioning and holding limbs.
  • Assists patients to and from wheelchair when applicable.
  • Insures all patients have an O2 tank on bed/stretcher for transportation to PACU.
  • Maintains orderliness of equipment.
  • Maintains proper level of linen.
  • Stocks warming cabinet daily.
  • Maintains proper level of supplies.
  • Exchanges oxygen and nitrogen tanks upon request.
  • Replaces specimen containers daily.
  • Takes specimen or culture to lab as requested.
  • Insures daily cleaning supplies are replaced as needed.
  • Maintains adequate levels of suction canisters / lids, plastic linen / trash liners daily.
  • Adheres to all safety procedures.
  • Keeps corridors free of stretchers and other equipment when not in use.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills with all team members, patients and families.
  • Communicates throughout the day with OR Supervisor.
  • Checks for special instructions throughout day.
  • Alerts OR Supervisor or designee of maintenance problems.
  • Communicates problems / questions with OR supervisor.
  • Participates in the hospital wide Performance Improvement Program.
  • Implement activities as recommended by PI Teams and/or Department.
  • Attends departmental meeting / reads and initials hospital memos, minutes, and unit communications.
  • Demonstrates evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Identifies own learning needs and seeks opportunities for self-growth and career advancement.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
  • May work at Main OR or in the ASC OR as requested/required by surgical schedule.
