POSITION SUMMARY The Surgical Oncology Nurse Navigator (SONN) at the Spencer Cancer Center is responsible for implementing the surgical oncology navigation program. This role is critical to ensure safe, timely, and standardized surgical care. This position will cover surgeries done in gynecologic oncology and the breast surgery clinic. The SONN works closely with the multidisciplinary team to navigate services across the surgical care continuum. Duties include but are not limited to: Providing comprehensive pre-operative education covering procedure details, recovery expectations, drain care, pain management, and support resources Coordinating all pre-surgical requirements (labs, imaging, medical clearances) Serving as the primary point of contact for surgical patients and families Conducting post-operative hospital rounds to reinforce education, evaluate patient readiness, and communicate concerns to the surgeon Coordinating follow-up appointments and managing transitions from hospital to outpatient care Ensuring patients have access to lymphedema prevention resources, prosthetic fittings, survivorship planning, and psychosocial support Scheduling surgeries Reducing preventable ED visits and readmissions by providing early intervention and standardized discharge reinforcement

Requirements

  • Minimum Education ADN
  • Minimum Experience 2 years surgical nursing experience in an ambulatory setting
  • Required Registration/License/Certification BLS & ACLS within 3 months

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred Education MSN
  • Prior experience as a navigator
  • Prior experience in oncology and surgery project or program development and management experience
  • Preferred Registration/License/Certification OCN / 12 MONTHS OR IN AREA OF SPECIALTY / 3 YEARS

Responsibilities
