About The Position

The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) plays a crucial role in the surgical team, working closely with the surgeon and the RN Circulator to ensure optimal patient positioning and safety during surgical procedures. This position requires a high level of expertise in surgical techniques, patient care, and collaboration with other healthcare professionals. The CSFA is responsible for various tasks, including assisting in hemostasis, closure of body planes, and wound dressing application, while also adhering to strict safety and hygiene protocols. The role demands effective communication skills, adaptability, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Graduation from a surgical assisting program accredited by ARC/STSA.
  • At least two years of surgical technician experience with additional experience as Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA).
  • Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of general computer skills and applications.
  • Understand specialized first assistant techniques and procedures related to hemostasis, retracting, and suturing.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation and the ability to work effectively in collaboration with others.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt to changing situations.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the surgeon and RN Circulator for patient positioning and comfort during surgical procedures.
  • Ensure proper padding of pressure points to prevent circulation impairment and nerve damage.
  • Maintain the patient's desired temperature during surgery in coordination with anesthesia personnel.
  • Utilize various equipment for patient positioning, including fracture tables and stabilizers.
  • Evaluate the patient post-procedure for any damage from positioning and report findings to the surgeon.
  • Assist in the visualization of the operative site by placing and securing retractors, packing sponges, and manipulating tissue as needed.
  • Employ appropriate hemostasis techniques, including clamping, cauterizing, and applying hemostatic agents.
  • Assist in the closure of body planes using various suturing techniques as directed by the surgeon.
  • Select and apply appropriate wound dressings and assist in securing drainage systems.
