About The Position

The Surgical Facilitator at the Albuquerque Ambulatory Eye Surgery Center (AAESC) plays a crucial role in supporting Anterior Segment surgeons by ensuring smooth surgical services and a high-quality experience for patients. This position involves direct communication with patients, surgeons, and OR staff, as well as the management of surgical preparations and documentation. The facilitator is responsible for interpreting medical data, confirming surgical plans, and assisting in various surgical procedures while adhering to safety and quality standards.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent, plus at least two years of additional education and/or experience as an OR technician.
  • Continuing education required to maintain certification as Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and/or Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA).
  • Mathematical aptitude and great attention to detail and organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Ophthalmic Surgical Assistant certification.
  • Registered Ophthalmic Ultrasound Biometrist (R.O.U.B.) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates information to patients regarding intended refractive results after cataract surgery and answers patient questions.
  • Reviews patient charts prior to surgery to ensure complete surgical plans and verifies intraocular lens orders.
  • Supplies the OR with a daily list of surgery patients requiring implants and pertinent data.
  • Documents patient history and updates medical records following physician exams.
  • Evaluates patient's documented visual acuity and exam findings for consistency and accuracy.
  • Authorizes medication refills according to established guidelines and documents them in the patient's medical record.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of special tests and IOL calculation methods.
  • Assists surgeons intraoperatively with machine settings and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Maintains communication among physicians, technicians, and support staff to ensure standard-of-care practices.
  • Coordinates the development of skilled technicians and assists with training programs.
  • Works with the surgery scheduling department to maintain communication between the clinic and surgery center.
  • Demonstrates general knowledge in the ophthalmology specialty and prepares the operating room for surgical procedures.
  • Evaluates and coordinates activities during surgical procedures by anticipating surgeon's needs.
  • Maintains an accurate count of sponges, needles, and instruments during procedures.
  • Decontaminates instruments and maintains knowledge of anatomy and physiology relevant to the role.
  • Ensures that ORs are stocked and that excess sterile items are stored appropriately.
