About The Position

The Surgical Dental Assistant plays a critical role in supporting oral surgeons and dental providers during surgical procedures. This position assists with patient preparation, chairside surgical assistance, sterilization, and post-operative care while ensuring a safe, efficient, and compassionate clinical environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited Dental Assisting program
  • Current Dental Assistant certification or registration (per state requirements)
  • CPR/BLS certification
  • Radiology certification (as required by state law)
  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity
  • Ability to remain calm and focused in surgical settings
  • Excellent communication and patient-care skills
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a surgical team
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
  • Prolonged standing and chairside assisting
  • Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and medical waste (with appropriate PPE)

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience assisting in oral surgery or surgical dentistry
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures
  • Familiarity with dental practice management software

Responsibilities

  • Assist oral surgeons and dentists during surgical procedures, including extractions, implants, bone grafts, and biopsies
  • Prepare treatment rooms and surgical instruments prior to procedures
  • Maintain a sterile field and adhere to infection control protocols
  • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs during procedures
  • Prepare patients for surgery and explain procedures and post-operative instructions
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after surgical procedures
  • Provide post-operative care instructions and ensure patient comfort
  • Perform sterilization and disinfection of instruments and surgical areas
  • Follow OSHA, HIPAA, and CDC guidelines
  • Maintain proper handling and disposal of biohazard materials
  • Take and process dental radiographs as required
  • Accurately document procedures, patient information, and treatment notes
  • Update and maintain patient records in the practice management system
  • Assist with inventory management of surgical supplies and medications
  • Coordinate with front office staff regarding patient flow and scheduling
  • Support compliance with state and federal regulations
