About The Position

The Surgical Attendant performs a variety of technical, environmental, and patient‑care duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Responsibilities are carried out in accordance with hospital and nursing policies and within the legal scope of practice for unlicensed caregivers.

Requirements

  • Six months of experience in a hospital setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification required.
  • Basic mechanical skills for assembling and operating equipment.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and safe surgical‑field practices.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties, including: Heavy lifting Prolonged standing, walking, or sitting Pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling Overhead reaching Trunk rotation for extended periods

Responsibilities

  • Verify patient identification and location to ensure safety.
  • Assist with patient transfers and transportation following departmental safety protocols.
  • Communicate respectfully with patients and respond promptly to needs; escalate requests to appropriate personnel when necessary.
  • Provide age‑appropriate care according to the RN‑developed plan of care.
  • Complete annual education on age‑specific competencies (infant through geriatric).
  • Assist with patient positioning and preparation for surgical procedures.
  • Support application of wraps, casts, and dressings.
  • Provide emergency assistance at the direction of surgeons or nursing staff.
  • Prepare units for surgical cases by gathering and setting up functional equipment and supplies.
  • Set up and troubleshoot equipment within the assigned service line, and operate at least 85% of equipment used in other surgical specialties.
  • Safely utilize all patient‑positioning devices and surgical tables.
  • Transport specimens, equipment, and materials efficiently and in accordance with safety standards.
  • Identify malfunctioning equipment, document issues, and route items to the proper maintenance department.
  • Perform minor equipment maintenance such as replacing light bulbs in power sources or surgical lights.
  • Clean equipment, surgical tables, and floors using approved cleaning solutions.
  • Collect, bag, and dispose of soiled linen and trash according to protocol.
  • Restock supplies including suction liners, trash bags, and sub‑room items.
  • Return cleaned equipment to designated storage areas.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard‑free environment in operating rooms, hallways, storage areas, and other units.
  • Keep the charge nurse informed of room status and attendant availability.
  • Assist with the orientation of new staff as directed by the nurse manager or designee.
  • Monitor and maintain unit supplies and equipment.
