About The Position

The University of Miami Health System at Doral has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Surgical Assistant with a hire date of June, 2024. The University of Miami Health System will soon open the second phase to our state-of-the-art facility in Downtown Doral that serves as a western hub for our distinguished regional network of ambulatory services. This 160,000 square foot expansion will continue to bring world-class academic medicine, cutting-edge technology, and innovative treatment options to the rapidly growing Doral community. UHealth at Doral will have services through the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and the Desai Sethi Urology Institute, as well as specialties such as cardiology, endocrinology, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, dermatology, and more. The expansion will provide residents with innovative, specialized medical services in the heart of their community. Once complete, UHealth at Doral will have 8 operating rooms, 3 endoscopy procedure rooms, 33 cancer treatment bays, over 60 multidisciplinary exam rooms, and supporting ancillary services like imaging, lab, and respiratory therapy. UHealth at Doral will open in September, 2024. CORE JOB SUMMARY The Surgical Assistant supports surgeons during surgical procedures. More specifically, an employee in this position provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition, the Surgical Assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited program, four-year degree in related field, or medical school graduate (foreign or domestic)
  • Certification in relevant specialty or field
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

Responsibilities

  • Maintains established University and hospital directives and safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Preserves current knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Maintains hemostasis by direct pressure, use, and application of appropriate surgical instruments, placement of ties and suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents, or other necessary measures.
  • Assists with retracting tissues and performs wound closure.
  • Prepares surgical site and drapes and positions patient to obtain the best exposure for the surgical procedure.
  • Provides visualization of the operative sight by placing and securing retractors, packing with sponges, manipulating tissue, suctioning, irrigating, and manipulating suture materials.
  • Facilitates volume replacement or auto-transfusion techniques.
  • Selects and applies appropriate wound dressing.
  • Ensures that drainage systems are appropriately secured to tissue.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
