The Surgical Assistant is responsible for providing patient care before, during, and after surgery. The primary purpose of this position is to perform tasks which permit the surgeon to complete an efficient and safe operation. Engages in population appropriate communication, has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks, and gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient. Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems. Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately. Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from unique psychological needs or those associated with religious/cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.

  • Position the patient considering comfort and safety while achieving the best exposure for the surgical procedure.
  • Padding all points of pressure: elbows, heels, knees, eyes, face, & axially region.
  • Prevent impairment of circulation using a tourniquet for some procedures.
  • Guard against nerve damage.
  • Knowledge about common positions related to surgical procedures and use of equipment for positioning.
  • Evaluate the patient for any possible positioning damage following the procedure and report abnormal conditions to the surgeon.
  • Provide visualization of the operative site by following appropriate placement and securing of retractors.
  • Utilize appropriate techniques to assist with homeostasis.
  • Utilize appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes.
  • Select and apply appropriate wound dressings.
  • Provide assistance in securing drainage systems to tissue.
  • Participate in the evaluation of new programs, procedures, equipment, etc.
  • Communicate in a positive and respectful manner with patients, visitors, physicians, and other hospital departments.
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff.
  • Assist in decision making and problem solving.
  • Participate in activities as required in surgical lab.
  • Participate in education of surgical team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Two years college and/or must have attended a specialty course for surgical assisting.
  • Must be certified in an approved Surgical Assistant program (e.g., CFA, SCS, CRNFA, RNFA or PA-C) within the first twelve months of employment.
  • BLS certification required.
  • ACLS certification preferred.
  • 2 to 5 years experience in general and/or specialty area preferred.
