About The Position

Under the direct and immediate supervision of a surgeon, the Surgical First Assistant will perform the role of first assistant during surgical procedures. This position requires compliance with shift, unit, and organizational policies and procedures, including reliability and attendance standards. The assistant will monitor and take corrective action to prevent recurring absences, return promptly from breaks, and restrict personal business to non-patient care areas during break times. The role also involves maintaining confidentiality of all patient and organization records and information in accordance with HIPAA standards, participating in staff meetings and in-services, and complying with contractual responsibilities related to work schedules. Continuous learning and professional development are emphasized, along with effective communication and collaboration with the healthcare team.

Requirements

  • Minimum two (2) years operating room experience (Surgical Assist or Surgical Tech) required.
  • Graduation from an Accredited Surgical First Assist Program required.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required.
  • Certified Surgical Assistant Certificate from National Surgical Assistant Association OR Surgical First Assistant Certificate from National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • Understanding of human anatomy and physiology and operating room techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) to five (5) years in a hospital O.R. or ambulatory surgery setting as a Surgical Assistant.
  • Familiarity with a full range of procedures.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a healthcare-related field of study.

Responsibilities

  • Complies with shift, unit, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Monitors and takes corrective action to prevent recurring absences.
  • Returns promptly from breaks and schedules them to provide adequate coverage.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient and organization records and information.
  • Attends and constructively participates in staff meetings and in-services.
  • Participates in unit Quality Assurance programs.
  • Utilizes professional communication techniques.
  • Promotes collaboration and professional interaction with the healthcare team.
  • Acts as a mentor/coach in assisting team members.
  • Communicates information to maintain continuity of care.
  • Participates in accurate pre-operative briefing and time out.
  • Demonstrates and maintains appropriate application of surgical asepsis principles.
  • Assists in patient positioning under the direction of the surgeon.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of various surgical procedures and individual surgeon preferences.
  • Maintains a dry field of operation through proper use of suction and sponging techniques.
  • Applies dressings, splints, plaster casts, and/or traction according to physician orders.
  • Assists in circulating duties under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse.
  • Participates in clean-up and room turnover including light housekeeping duties.
