About The Position

The Surgical Assistant at Mayo Clinic plays a crucial role in the operating room, assisting the surgeon during surgical procedures. Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certification as a surgical first assistant or completion of surgical specialty checklist within six months of hire.
• Minimum three to five years of experience in the surgical scrub (Surgical Tech) role.
• Technical proficiency in the First Surgical Assistant role is preferred.
• Experience in Orthopedics, GYN, and robotic procedures is strongly preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

• Assist the operating surgeon in the first or second assistant role during surgical procedures.
• Maintain knowledge of anatomy, instrumentation, patient safety, and sterile technique.
• Ensure safe and effective exposure, tissue handling, hemostasis, and wound closure during surgeries.
• Recognize and name surgical instruments and understand their specific uses in various intraoperative situations.
• Anticipate steps of surgical procedures and perform accordingly during each phase of surgery.
