The Surgical RN has responsibilities to perform duties in all areas of the unit: Central Supply, Recovery Room, Major and Minor surgery areas, as well as Same Day Surgery. Using the nursing process, each patient is assessed, and a plan of care developed and implemented for patients of all ages, including infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. Also acts as educator preoperatively when discussing case with patient and postoperatively when giving discharge instructions. The Surgery RN is responsible for management of airway (O2, ET tube and suctioning techniques), chest drainage tubes, catheters (urethral, suprapubic, and 3-way irrigation), IV lines, central lines, administration of blood and blood products, and suction equipment. Other knowledge includes monitoring laparoscopic, orthopedic, arthroscopic, and general surgical equipment. The OR nurse participates in Quality Improvement, Quality Control, narcotic counts, submission of daily charges and statistics, updates chart, reviews test results and understands significance.
