The role of the Surface Inspection Technician is an integral part of the Technical Service team responsible for working with the Automated Surface Inspection Systems (ASIS) operating and maintaining high‑speed surface inspection systems used to detect and monitor surface conditions throughout the process. The position is responsible for reviewing live and recorded imagery, validating automated condition alerts, and communicating concerns quickly to production, maintenance, and quality teams to protect downstream operations. Additional responsibilities include analyzing surface‑condition trends, maintaining accurate inspection and system‑performance records, and supporting root‑cause investigations and continuous‑improvement efforts. The employee also performs routine cleaning, alignment, and troubleshooting of cameras, lighting, and sensors, and works closely with maintenance and automation teams to keep inspection equipment aligned, optimized, and reliable under changing mill conditions. The position is assigned to a Monday–Friday day shift and includes participation in a rotating on‑call schedule. On‑call responsibilities may require remote access or on‑site response outside of standard work hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays. Nucor Steel West Virginia is Nucor’s new sheet mill with advanced steel making capabilities and lower carbon emissions. This is a greenfield project, which is estimated to be fully operational after two years of construction. The new steel mill will employ 800 full-time teammates producing up to 3 million tons per year at one of the most technologically advanced sheet mills and is located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in close proximity to both Huntington and Charleston, WV. Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Requirements

  • Experience with industrial camera systems, machine vision, or automated inspection equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical certificate or associate degree in electronics, automation, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of industrial production processes such as hot mill, cold mill, casting, or finishing.
  • Mechanical and technical aptitude are essential, as well as the ability to interpret images, patterns, and surface conditions.
  • Familiarity with industrial software interfaces, OPC, SCADA systems, or vision‑system software is preferred.
  • Hardware/software technical understanding, interfaces, network systems.
