About The Position

The Surface Inspection Specialist is responsible for the configuration, data management, and system (non-hardware) maintenance of six automated surface inspection systems throughout the mill. This role ensures the effective identification, classification, documentation, and communication of surface defects on hot-rolled, cold-rolled, coated, and painted steel products. The position serves as the mill subject matter expert (SME) for automated optical inspection (AOI) systems and supports quality, operations, and technical teams to ensure compliance with customer specifications and applicable standards (ASTM, ISO, SAE, API, IATF). The role includes defect analysis, system optimization, data trending, reporting, and operator guidance to prevent nonconforming material from reaching customers.

  • 3+ years of experience in manufacturing, metal processing, or industrial environment
  • 3+ years’ experience with automated optical inspection (AOI) or machine vision systems
  • Experience identifying and classifying surface defects in rolled or coated steel products
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools (Excel, Access, SQL, SPC software, etc.)
  • Experience working within quality management systems (ISO 9001, IATF 16949)
  • Familiarity with ASTM, SAE, API, or customer-specific surface quality standards
  • Experience using precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, gauges)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to support root cause investigations

  • Identify, classify, and validate surface defects (e.g., cracks, pits, roll marks, scale, inclusions, scratches, coating imperfections)
  • Perform manual verification inspections as needed using precision tools (micrometers, calipers, gauges)
  • Maintain defect libraries and classification standards aligned with internal specifications and customer requirements
  • Generate, review, and distribute quality reports and trend analyses using Excel, Word, SQL-based systems, and Level data platforms
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, metallurgy, and quality teams to determine root cause of recurring surface defects
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by utilizing defect data to reduce scrap, claims, and rework
  • Maintain calibration schedules and system validation protocols (software/system functionality – not hardware repair)
  • Ensure compliance with ASTM, ISO, SAE, API, and IATF standards related to surface quality
  • Support customer audits and surface quality investigations
