Job Description IAT Insurance Group has an opening for a Surety Underwriting Internship within our Surety Business Unit in our Cheshire, Connecticut location for the summer of 2026. At the conclusion of the internship, participants in the program should able to demonstrate applied understanding of Surety underwriting, supported by key knowledge in accounting and financial analysis. The anticipated start date for this internship is May 26th, 2026. Please note, IAT works on a hybrid schedule, working from the office Monday through Wednesday with the option of working remotely Thursday and Friday.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work out of our Cheshire, CT office without housing assistance or relocation assistance from IAT Insurance Group.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with underwriters and other team members.
  • Solid analytical and critical‑thinking skills with the ability to interpret financial statements.
  • Basic understanding (or interest in learning) of accounting principles, financial ratios, and business analysis.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Ability to research, evaluate, and summarize information clearly.
  • To qualify, applicants must be authorized to work in the United States and must not require VISA sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment purposes.

  • Strong academic performance with coursework in finance, accounting, or statistics

Responsibilities

  • Develop and be able to demonstrate applied understanding of analytical skills, including foundational knowledge of accounting, Surety underwriting principles, and financial analysis.
  • Accurately organize, maintain, and update underwriting files in accordance with department protocols.
  • Develop and be able to demonstrate applied understanding of bond types, industry class codes, and rating methodologies.
  • Prepare to sit for the AFSB 151 and AFSB 152 exams as part of professional development.
  • Deliver a satisfactory capstone presentation that meets grading rubric standards
  • Complete all goals, assignments, and projects set by the manager by their specified deadlines.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
