About The Position

The Surety Lead Account Underwriter is responsible for marketing, underwriting, processing, and servicing surety business as assigned or within a defined territory. They are responsible for decisions on acceptance or declination of larger and higher exposure bonds within established authority. They independently develop and underwrite profitable surety business by visiting assigned agencies or services offices. They serve as highest level underwriters without leadership responsibility and are regarded as a peer leader within the Surety Department. They coach and mentor bond personnel on selected contract accounts, including various financial and workload analysis.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of surety underwriting experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field and/or commensurate work experience.
  • Valid driver's license and a driving record that conforms to company standards.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, underwrites, and prices surety bonds submitted to the company within parameters and guidelines.
  • Investigates the bonds' legal scope and drives the issuance of surety bonds (guarantees) and negotiates the bond contract terms.
  • Manages an existing portfolio of accounts and partners with key agencies to develop new business opportunities.
  • Drives the marketing, underwriting, processing, and servicing surety business as assigned or within a defined territory.
  • Monitors underwriting results and loss ratio associated with accounts.
  • Reduces risk profile across a wide spectrum of business and manages costs to meet targeted profitability metrics.
  • Makes decisions on acceptance or declination of larger, higher exposure bonds within established authority.
  • Submits/makes recommendations for approval of assigned risks outside of authority.
  • Drives training activities related to underwriting, marketing, and processing surety business and provides guidance and direction to other Account Underwriters with regards to skill development and making decisions related to underwriting and marketing.
  • Manages select agency relationships to ensure objectives are achieved and assists with agency planning and goal setting.
  • Visits assigned agencies or service offices independently to develop and underwrite profitable business.
  • Provides technical proficiency to Bond Personnel on selected contract accounts, including various financial and workload analysis.
  • Ensures accuracy, completeness, and procedural consistency of assigned files and the operation of reporting, processing, and filing systems for all bonds produced by assigned agents or service offices.
  • Keeps current on industry trends and maintains an active involvement in industry affairs to enhance market presence and for education purposes.
  • Travels as often as needed including regular utilization of assigned fleet vehicle in order to cover assigned territory.
  • This may involve traveling on short notice or other daily driving duties as assigned.
