This position is responsible for operational management of the Sterile Processing Department. Demonstrates expert knowledge of hospital and departmental standards, policies and procedures, infection control practices, decontamination, assembly and sterilization of instruments, best practices according to regulatory agencies and organization of department activities to assure the needs of the customers are met. Adheres to practicing the following guidelines: Consults all federal and state recommended practices included but not limited to AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation), AORN (Association for Perioperative Registered Nurses), TJC (The Joint Commission), CMS (Centers for Medicaid Medicare services), and APIC (Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology) guidelines and recommended practices.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of SPD or OR experience required.
  • SPD Certification required.
  • Ability to successfully complete generic and department-specific skills validation and competency testing.
  • Knowledge of microbiology and sterilization principles.
  • Demonstrates effective and appropriate customer relations skills, verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, interpersonal relationship skills, conflict resolution skills and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • 4 Year/Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Prior leadership experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates evidence of and a desire to continue developing leadership characteristics and behaviors.

Responsibilities

  • Consults all federal and state recommended practices included but not limited to AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation), AORN (Association for Perioperative Registered Nurses), TJC (The Joint Commission), CMS (Centers for Medicaid Medicare services), and APIC (Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology) guidelines and recommended practices.
  • Collaborates with the leadership team and UCIC to identify and resolve unit issues.
  • Keeps co-workers and intra-op staff informed of any updates/issues.
  • Complies with established departmental and organization policies/guidelines.
  • Maintains, operates, and monitors all equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and department standards.
  • Collects, organizes, and enters information into the patient scheduling application.
  • Assists with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique.
