About The Position

Our team is committed to safety, professionalism, and operational excellence. The Support Vehicle Operator plays a critical role in autonomous vehicle (AV) testing and operations by providing a protective buffer, monitoring traffic and environmental conditions, and supporting the AV team during live operations. Support Vehicle Operators help ensure both public and operational safety by proactively identifying hazards, assisting with emergency responses, and coordinating with field and AV teams. Success in this role requires strong situational awareness, clear communication, and the ability to respond quickly to dynamic conditions. Support Vehicle Operators are responsible for maintaining safe distances behind AVs, monitoring system and environmental conditions, participating in pre- and post-trip briefings, and accurately reporting observations and incidents. This role also includes inspecting vehicles, verifying communication systems, and applying feedback from test reviews to continually improve safety and operational performance. Requirements

  • Valid C driver’s license with a clean driving record required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional driving experience preferred; fleet, transportation, or AV testing experience is a plus.
  • High School Diploma or GED required; additional technical or vocational training preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate vehicles safely in dynamic traffic and testing environments.
  • Experience in reporting, logging, or coordinating operational activities preferred.
  • Strong situational awareness and hazard recognition skills.
  • Ability to operate and maneuver a vehicle safely while monitoring surrounding traffic and conditions.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills for reporting, logging, and escalation.
  • Proficiency with communication tools, GPS, and monitoring systems.
  • Ability to multitask and respond effectively to dynamic scenarios or unexpected events.
  • Adaptable to changing routes, operational priorities, and environmental conditions.
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and able to make quick, informed decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with field teams, remote operations staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Willingness to work varying shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and peak operations.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods while operating the chase vehicle.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach when performing inspections or emergency support.
  • Manual dexterity, vision, and hearing sufficient to operate vehicles and communication devices safely.
  • Ability to remain alert and focused during long periods of driving, monitoring, or responding to incidents.
  • Work may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and extended outdoor activity.
  • Must be 21 years old;
  • Must possess a valid C driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Must meet minimum professional driving experience requirements.
  • Must consent to Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and, where applicable, drug screening and criminal background check.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to safely perform all essential job functions.
  • Must provide accurate employment history and licensing information and disclose any potential pre-employment concerns.
  • Must confirm availability for assigned shifts and willingness to work flexible schedules.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency with required technology and communication systems during the hiring process.
  • Be eligible to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship now or in the future (if based in the U.S.).
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe following distance and protective buffer behind autonomous vehicles during testing.
  • Continuously monitor traffic, road hazards, and AV status; communicate updates and potential risks to the AV team.
  • Support disengagements, system issues, and emergency response procedures as required.
  • Log and report observations, incidents, or environmental hazards accurately and promptly.
  • Coordinate with field teams and remote operations staff to ensure smooth and safe AV testing.
  • Inspect the chase vehicle prior to operation, verifying radios, GPS, and communication systems are functional.
  • Participate in pre-trip briefings, reviewing testing plans, emergency procedures, and operational objectives.
  • Complete post-trip inspections, upload data, and participate in team debriefs.
  • Comply with all local, state, and federal AV testing regulations and company safety policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of AV technology, operational data, and testing procedures.
  • Apply feedback from test reviews to improve safety, performance, and operational procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support safe and efficient AV operations.
