The Support System Administrator will be responsible for supporting the migration and modernization of EOL systems, including legacy systems running older versions of Windows and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The role will focus on upgrading these systems to supported OS versions (e.g., Windows Server 2016/2019/2022, RHEL 5/6/7/8/9) to ensure improved security, performance, and operational continuity. OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Maintains, analyzes, troubleshoots, and repairs computer systems, hardware, and computer peripherals. Documents, maintains, upgrades or replaces hardware and software systems. Supports and maintains user account information including rights, security, and systems groups. Performs basic operation, monitoring, installation, trouble shooting, relocations, or maintenance of communications equipment. Identifies and resolves basic communications problems. Prepares or assists in the preparation of service record documentation. Shows awareness of standards and regulatory requirements related to assigned tasks. Assists in monitoring and providing assistance on the use and interface of systems, subsystems, and software applications. May be responsible for accessing data from and transferring data to various local, state, or federal databases. May assist in the review and recommendation of the procurement and inventory of information resources hardware or software. May write and update personal computer and mainframe application programs. Experience in automated data processing systems. Knowledge of the practices, principles, and techniques of computer operations, of information systems, of computer software and hardware, and of information security policies and procedures. Skill in the use and support of personal computers, in the use of applicable programs and systems, and in troubleshooting information systems. Ability to operate information technology systems, to communicate effectively, and to train others. Provides assistance in the design, development, and maintenance of various system applications. Provides technical assistance and support for applications and hardware problems. Installs, maintains, moves, and assists in testing and upgrading new and existing hardware/software. Reviews and recommends procurement of information technology equipment. Maintains the necessary security controls over software. Makes presentations and briefings for training sessions. Prepares briefings, reports, and evaluations on system efficiency and utilization. May be responsible for accessing data from and transferring data to various local, state, or federal databases. Installs, maintains, moves, and assists in testing and upgrading new and existing hardware and software. Reviews and recommends procurement of information technology equipment. Maintains the necessary security controls over software. Develops procedure manuals. Develops and makes presentations and briefings for training sessions. Prepares briefings, reports, and evaluations on systems efficiency and utilization. May supervise the work of others.

Requirements

  • Experience with RHEL 5/6/7/8/9, and Windows Server (2008-2022).
  • Proficiency in system administration for both Linux (RHEL 5/6 and RHEL 7/8/9) and Windows environments.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills for legacy systems (RHEL 5/6 and older Windows versions).
  • Experience with in-place upgrades and fresh installs for RHEL and older Windows versions to Windows Server.
  • Familiarity with configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible for RHEL, PowerShell, SCCM, for Windows).
  • Proficient in system automation and scripting (Bash, PowerShell, Ansible).
  • Strong security knowledge, including patch management, system hardening, and vulnerability scanning for both Windows and RHEL systems.
  • Experience with backup and recovery solutions for legacy systems.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware).
  • 8 years hands on upgrades of systems is needed for both windows and RHEL.
  • STIG-based Hardening: Experience in implementing STIG (Security Technical Implementation Guide) recommendations to harden both RHEL (5/6/7/8/9) and Windows Server systems, ensuring systems are configured to meet Department of Defense (DoD) security standards and best practices.
  • RHEL STIG Compliance: Proficient in applying RHEL-specific STIG guidelines to harden Linux systems, including configuring SELinux, firewall rules, user permissions, and audit logs.
  • Windows STIG Compliance: Hands-on experience ensuring Windows Server systems (2012/2016/2019/2022) adhere to Windows STIGs, including configuring Group Policy settings, Windows Defender, and local security policies to secure the OS.
  • Audit and Security Log Management: Ability to configure auditd for RHEL and Event Log for Windows to ensure that security events are logged and monitored in compliance with STIGs.
  • Mitigating Common Vulnerabilities: Address vulnerabilities related to CIS Benchmarks, STIGs, and other security frameworks, ensuring that systems are hardened against common threats and attacks.
  • Automated Hardening and Remediation: Utilize automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or PowerShell scripts to ensure continuous compliance with STIGs across multiple systems.
  • STIG Remediation & Patch Management: Proficiency in running vulnerability scans (e.g., using Nessus, OpenVAS, or SCAP scanners) to check for compliance with STIGs and then applying necessary patches and configuration changes to remediate vulnerabilities.
  • Implement continuous STIG compliance checks in production environments to ensure systems remain secure as patches and updates are applied.
  • Security Hardening Automation: Expertise in automating STIG compliance tasks using tools like OpenSCAP, Ansible, or custom scripts to ensure that both RHEL and Windows systems are consistently hardening to meet required security standards without manual intervention.
