About The Position

The Intern supports an assigned business area by assisting with day-to-day projects and operational initiatives that contribute directly to business objectives. This role provides hands-on exposure to core processes, tools and cross functional collaboration within the organization. The Intern conducts research, prepares basic analyses and presentations, documents workflows, and participates in team meetings and project reviews. The position is intended to develop foundational professional skills, support on-going initiatives and contribute to the successful execution of department priorities. The Transportation department within the distribution center is responsible for planning, executing, and optimizing the movement of freight with our third‑party logistics (3PL) providers. The team manages carrier relationships, monitors service and cost performance, and ensures orders are shipped on time and in full to our customers and facilities. Core functions include building and maintaining routing guides, overseeing daily shipment execution, tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on‑time delivery and cost per shipment, and driving continuous improvement initiatives to enhance service, reduce spend, and increase operational efficiency across the network.

Requirements

  • To be considered for this role, applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in a relevant field (e.g., Business, Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, etc.) at an accredited university.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and collaboration tools (e.g., Outlook, Teams).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, curious, and eager to learn in a fast-paced environment.
  • Aptitude and willingness to learn and self-teach new skills.
  • Fearlessly curious – challenging the status quo by looking at solutions in unconventional ways and seeing opportunities to innovate.
  • Strong sense of business acumen.

  • Must be available to work up to 40 hours per week during the entire length of the program.

  • Ability to interpret trends, variances, and basic KPI metrics and explain them in simple terms.
  • Comfortable breaking down a problem, structuring an approach, and drawing insights from data.

Nice To Haves

  • No prior professional experience required. Previous internship, co-op, part-time, or project experience is a plus. Relevant coursework and academic projects that demonstrate analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Coursework or prior internship touching on transportation, 3PLs, carrier management, routing, or distribution center operations.
  • Understanding of basic logistics KPIs (on-time performance, cost per shipment, fill rate, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Support day to day projects and operational tasks – Assist with projects and daily activities within the assigned business area (e.g., data updates, status tracking, coordination) to ensure timely and accurate completion of team priorities.
  • Conduct research and prepare analytical materials – Gather information, analyze data, and compile findings into clear summaries, reports, or presentations to support decision making and project planning.
  • Participate in team and cross‑functional meetings – Attend team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and project reviews; capture notes, follow‑up items, and contribute ideas to improve processes and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional partners – Work with colleagues in other departments (e.g., Finance, Marketing, Operations) to support ongoing initiatives, share information, and help drive alignment on project goals and deliverables.
  • Document and improve processes – Help document workflows, update trackers and dashboards (e.g., Excel, project management tools), and maintain accurate records to improve transparency, consistency, and efficiency.
  • Deliver an end‑of‑internship project or presentation – Synthesize key learnings, project contributions, and recommendations into a final presentation or recap to share outcomes and insights with the team and leadership.
  • Support Transportation KPI Analysis – Assist in collecting, calculating, and validating key performance indicators (on‑time performance, cost per shipment, tender acceptance, transit time, damage rates, etc.) for 3PL carriers and brokers.
  • Maintain Weekly and Monthly Dashboards – Update and refresh transportation performance dashboards and scorecards in Excel/BI tools to provide clear visibility to service, cost, and quality trends.
  • Cost and Savings Tracking – Assist in tracking transportation costs, identifying cost‑saving opportunities, and documenting benefits from process or routing changes.
  • Exception and Root Cause Review – Help investigate late deliveries, service failures, and accessorial charge exceptions; document root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
