About The Position

The Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE) serves as the technical liaison between GM Purchasing, Product Engineering, Manufacturing, and our supply base. In this role, you will work directly with suppliers to resolve manufacturing and quality issues, implement and monitor advanced quality planning systems, and provide technical support throughout the lifecycle of assigned commodities and components. This position is technical in nature and requires independent decision-making within the limits of general practices and standards. Mentorship and guidance are available from leadership for complex or unusual situations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Preferred in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, Manufacturing, Welding, Plastics, or Materials Engineering) or an equivalent technical field such as Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, or Physics.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in quality, engineering, or manufacturing.
  • Experience with injection molding, painting, forming, and waterjet cutting processes.
  • Proficient in print reading and interpretation, part measurement, gage design, and function.
  • Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Familiarity with manufacturing and assembly processes, procedures, tooling, equipment, and facilities.
  • Understanding of statistical quality control, probability, and design of experiments.
  • Proven ability to investigate quality issues and apply sound technical judgment to develop effective solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and lead diverse cross-functional teams simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, written, and presentation skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or Business.
  • Technical and/or quality certifications (e.g., Six Sigma, DFSS, Red X) are a plus.
  • Experience with interior and headliner components.
  • 1+ years of OEM or Tier-1 automotive experience in quality, manufacturing, or engineering functions.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: Statistical problem-solving (Red X, DFSS, DMAIC). Product engineering and validation. Lean manufacturing or manufacturing quality systems. Quality systems planning (APQP, PPAP)

Responsibilities

  • Execute the APQP process with assigned suppliers to meet or exceed program deliverables.
  • Conduct program reviews aligned with program milestones and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Ensure suppliers adhere to GM quality and manufacturing standards and identify out-of-standard conditions before parts move to the next stage or manufacturing site.
  • React to out-of-standard conditions and work cross-functionally to resolve known issues in a timely manner.
  • Assure supplier understanding and compliance with APQP processes and product PPAP submission and approval requirements.
  • Review and approve supplier quality plans (Control Plans, PFMEAs) for new components and assemblies for vehicle launch.
  • Review supplier manufacturing processes and quality systems for alignment to GM expectations.
  • Facilitate root cause analysis and corrective actions of supplier quality issues.
  • Perform on-site supplier visits for root cause analysis and verification of corrective actions.
  • Implement and monitor supplier part qualification and certification processes (PPAP, Run-at-Rate).
  • Improve supplier quality performance through workshops, on-site audits, and technical training.
  • Provide technical assistance during supplier launches, changeovers, and ongoing production activities.
