About The Position

The Supervisory Security Specialist serves as the Deputy Chief of Police within the Police Service of the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System. This role is responsible for assisting the Chief of Police in managing and directing police and security programs, ensuring the physical security of assets, information, buildings, and individuals. The position requires a strong focus on collaboration with federal law enforcement agencies and the development of policies aimed at improving relationships between Veterans and police.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this job.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-11 level in law enforcement and physical security activities.
  • Ability to carry agency-approved firearms while on duty.
  • Possess a valid, unrestricted state driver's license and demonstrate safe driving record.
  • Must pass a urinalysis drug test prior to appointment.

  • Experience in managing human resources in a law enforcement context.
  • Knowledge of physical security systems and protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, assigns, and explains work requirements to subordinates for new or changed programs.
  • Hears and resolves grievances and employee complaints, reviews serious disciplinary cases.
  • Ensures police staff are properly trained to operate a variety of equipment and/or security systems.
  • Interprets security policies and procedures and provides guidance to senior facility leadership and other service chiefs.
  • Keeps facility leadership informed regarding program successes and vulnerabilities.
  • Collaborates with leaders to address concerns, resolve program issues, and resource needs.
  • Serves as a liaison and subject matter expert with federal law enforcement agencies.
  • Assists in the development and modification of new Veteran-specific policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the protection of civil rights of all individuals on VA controlled property.
  • Assists with developing and implementing procedures for the detention or arrest of individuals suspected of violations.
  • Plans, directs, and updates the crime prevention program and manages investigations into criminal activities.
  • Manages the procurement and accountability of equipment and firearms used.
