This position is located at the Indian Health Services Red Lake, MN. The incumbent manages, supervises, coordinates and evaluates the Behavioral Health Division, in response to the mental health and substance abuse treatment needs for youth and adults. The incumbent plans, develops, coordinates, and evaluates a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient behavioral health service. The goal of this position is to refine and strengthen behavioral health services.

  • Performs psychiatric evaluations for patients in the Behavioral Health Department and on less frequent basis, the inpatient unit and emergency department.
  • Obtains appropriate diagnostic testing including medical, psychiatric and neuropsychiatric testing.
  • Prescribes pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments for patients with mental illness and evaluates the effects of therapy in follow-up.
  • Interprets labs and other medical testing as well as psychiatric and neuropsychiatric testing and uses such interpretations along with sound medical judgement to care for psychiatric patients.
  • Carries out health promotion and disease prevention activities, education, counseling of patients and families on mental illness and associated medical conditions and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
  • Attends and participates in administrative meetings and committees including Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with other local behavioral health organizations to better help coordinate care between them.
  • Supervises all Behavioral Health staff including social workers, psychologists, psychiatric APRNs, and support staff and works to maintain appropriate staffing levels within the department.
  • Must pass pre-employment examination.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Board Certification in Specialty of position applied for is required.
  • A one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period may be required upon selection/placement.
  • Measles, Rubella, and seasonal influenza immunization required for selectees born after 1957.
  • The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges.
  • Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Experience in managing a behavioral health division.
  • Familiarity with Indian Health Service policies and procedures.
  • Experience working with Native American populations.
