The Supervisory Medical Records Technician (Coder) position is located within the Health Information Management Service (HIMS) at the New Mexico VA Healthcare System. This role is critical as it oversees the Clinical Coding Program in a level 1A complexity, multi-level care medical center. The incumbent will serve as a technical expert in documentation requirements for accurate code assignment and will supervise residents in the coding department. The position contributes to the organization’s mission by assisting in the planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of a facility-wide coding compliance program. In this role, the Supervisory MRT (Coder) will apply comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, disease processes, treatment modalities, diagnostic tests, medications, and procedures. This knowledge is essential for ensuring proper code selection from various coding systems, including the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS). The technician will perform duties under the direction of the Chief of HIMS and will act as a primary resource for the Health Administration Service and all clinical services regarding Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) and Ambulatory Payment Classifications (APC). The responsibilities also include developing performance standards, conducting evaluations for subordinate staff, interviewing new employees, recommending selections, and overseeing training and development. The Supervisory MRT will ensure compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) programs and keep staff informed of management goals and objectives. Additionally, the technician will ensure the completion of the Patient Treatment File (PTF) process and assist in coordinating the Veterans Equitable Resource Allocation (VERA) Patient Classification Program. This position is essential for providing guidance on documentation requirements for accurate patient workload capture and code assignment, ultimately improving collections and coding accuracy.
