About The Position

The Supervisory Fire Management Specialist (Prescribed Fire and Fuels) position at the Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, involves providing program oversight and guidance related to the use of prescribed fire and naturally ignited wildfires to achieve Land and Resource Management Plan objectives. The specialist is responsible for the smoke management program to ensure compliance with state air quality standards and coordinates with federal, state, and local government air quality officials in their development of operational procedures and reporting. The role includes evaluating fuel treatments on-the-ground for compliance with policies, standards, and guidelines, and providing advice, counsel, and guidance to field personnel on correct procedures and practices. Additionally, the specialist develops local policy, standards, and guidelines for the Forest's Fuel Management Program, reviews environmental documents, and implements prescribed fire activities, wildfire response, and fuels management activities to ensure targets are achieved and management objectives are met. Leadership in fire management program areas such as contracting, fire planning, aviation, safety, and wildfire response is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test for certain Interagency Fire Program Management or Fire Program Management positions.
  • Prior wildland firefighting experience is required.
  • Willing to live/work in remote locations (volatile/unpredictable).
  • Some Fire positions may have additional Conditions of Employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Successfully completed the Primary NWCG Core Requirements of Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2).
  • Secondary NWCG Core Requirement of Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3) or Task Force Leader (TFLD).
  • Primary NWCG Core Requirements of Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2) and Secondary NWCG Core Requirement of Helibase Manager (HEBM).

Responsibilities
